An important piece of legislation is now in effect that allows parents and guardians to protect their child's credit record. Parents can contact each of the three major credit bureaus and for a small fee, request a freeze on the child's credit record.
This freeze prohibits anyone else from accessing the credit report, in turn causing the fraudulent credit application to be denied. According to a Carnegie Mellon University study, minors are more than 50% more likely to have their Social Security number stolen.
